The Allegory of Multiculturalism

The emancipation of women is still a very actual topic that is much discussed and written about. The concept attempts to approach the idea according to which all cultures should offer women the chance to integrate and express themselves on multiple social layers, including positions of authority.
Being that we have focused our attention towards the rural space, since it represents the origin and root of every culture, I have selected the symbol of the rooster as the culminating point of this thesis. I have closely observed the semi-folkloric and fairytale ramifications of this sacred symbol, in order to build a social message, an open letter, a manifest.
The rooster is a messenger, even in fashion, defending the true role of women throughout history and society, offering a powerful voice to the disempowered.

The center stage creation I have chosen is the shawl, an apparently plain concept but with an enormous potential due to its sizing, which in the physical attempts to symbolize multiculturalism and the assembly of the nations.
The shawl in itself as a fashion garment symbolizes fluidity, motion and ondulation. On a secondary plane, it implies the renounciation of rules, of closed off thinking and promotes openess and adaptability to context. In this particular case, the shawl symbolizes freedom. The color of choice is blue, symbol of water and sky, of the elements, speaking furthermore of fluidity and given the context, of the duality of the rooster as a creature who’s calling lingers between day and night.
